What am I drinking this summer? Sorry, before i can get to that [scroll down for a photo if your attention deficit is really low today] – can i just say that i can’t believe there is a Nickelback 2017 tour.
This summer i can’t stop drinking the Cucumber and Lime Gose, “Ceres”, from Nickel Brook Brewing Co. in Burlington. What is this “gose” thing that you just made up Travis and who is “Ceres”? It’s a sour beer with sea salt, cucumber, and lime juice with some Lactobaccilius to ferment the lot. And it’s freakin’ awesome. Gose is pronounced “gose-uh”, which is far easier to say than Gewürztraminer (pronounced [ɡəˈvʏɐtstʁaˈmiːnɐ]) – but i’m afraid that people may be hesitant to order it because they don’t want to make a mistake and sound stupid. So here’s my plea to all bartenders and servers out there – don’t correct us please. Just say something like “excellent choice my good patron”. Oh, and Ceres is the Roman goddess of agriculture. She sounds both smart, and pretty doesn’t she?
Ceres comes from Nickel Brook’s Funk Lab, where they make such clever wild concoctions as , Raspbery Uber Berlinerweisse, Ceres Cucumber-Lime Gose, Inquiry Brett Saison, Uncommon Element Brett Pale Ale and Cuvée Reserve Ales. I want them all. Now!
She is pretty isn’t she? Sorry I had to use a glass from Muskoka – i haven’t made it to Nickel Brook for the right glass to serve it in, and nobody there thought ahead to send me one.

A funny thing happened at the Farmers Market last Saturday. There was wine for sale! So I bought some – a Gewürztraminer Riesling from Pilletteri estates- and then made a delicious risotto for dinner with asparagus, brussels sprouts, and zucchini that I also bought at the farmers market.
The wine was a great blend of dry Riesling and the Gewürz perfume and honey – one of the best R-G blends from Niagara that I’ve had.
The proof is in the photos. I’m sure you can do the same this week. Thanks to the Government of Ontario for recognizing that this is an important part of farmers markets! In the words of Yakov Smirnoff – “What a country!”

I have a confession. The main (but not the only) reason that I enjoy a good Gewürztraminer is that whenever I say the word I think of Steve Carrell and Dana Carvey portraying Germans in this video.
Also, I like the information that Wikipedia provides for me. “Gewürztraminer [ɡəˈvʏɐtstʁaˈmiːnɐ] is an aromatic wine grape variety that performs best in cooler climates. It is sometimes referred to colloquially as Gewürz, and in French it is written Gewurztraminer (without the umlaut)”.
Firstly, and I know I’ve said it before, [ɡəˈvʏɐtstʁaˈmiːnɐ] is not helpful. Secondly, somebody tell me why the French have to be like that? There is no reason NOT to use the unlaut. The umlaut is fantastic. Use it!

Thanksgiving weekend is here! Now I know how confusing this is to my American readers. As my American wife once said, “Why do you have Thanksgiving? You didn’t have pilgrims”. She’s right. We do Thanksgiving differently around here. We don’t put the Detroit Lions on TV (clearly an upgrade), we don’t have a Black Friday, we do have turkey, but we don’t put marshmallows on yams. Heck, we don’t even celebrate on Thursday.
We do have a harvest celebration – sit around eating way too much food – and then finish it all off with pie. It’s the most gluttonous day of the year! So then, what do you drink for Thanksgiving? This is what I am having.
